Sick Baby!

Maybe she should quit smoking!

Or get out of prison!

I had been so grateful to get through Ivy's first year with no more illness than a little sniffle, but two days after she turned 1, she got really sick. On Sunday morning she was very fussy at the pool and when we got home she put her head in my lap. On Monday, she woke up with the runniest nose ever and a deep, throaty, chesty cough. She had her 12-month check-up that day, so we didn't make a special appointment. Dr. Foster said she had an ear infection and prescribed the bubblegum medicine. Ivy liked the medicine but not the delivery method. Our baby will not be force-fed! Now we dilute it with milk and give it to her in her bottle.

She was otherwise good at the doctor. Though she cried through her shots, she didn't seem to suffer any longer than that. She weighs 20lbs, 14oz and is 29.5 inches long. She is so much bigger than she was a year ago! And she's right in the 50th percentile for height and weight, not the 10th! Her head is 17 inches around, and in the 30th percentile (also getting bigger and more average). And, she can play piano.

It's probably all the good food she's been preparing for herself -- she's taken over the cooking.

We had a fun week playing with her. Her first favorite is the mailbox from Ana and Brendan. We have a hard time keeping track of all three letters -- one is always missing (usually the red).

She also likes to roll the ball back and forth, and carry it in her mouth.

She's the littlest baby in her swimming class, but one of the most fearless (and the tannest). She has learned to float on her tummy and her back, and to jump into our arms. It's fun for her to see all the other kids, though she wants to hold their ducks and frogs. The teachers seem to think she's as pretty and as happy as can be (of course).

There's not much news this week -- we just played and tried to do our work. We hate that our baby has a cough, and hope she gets better soon. Brittany comes on Monday, and I will so miss our long, lazy, summer baby days. We have been so lucky to have this time with her, both this summer and last summer. She likes playing in the garbage can, so we're glad to know all this time with her parents has paid off in her development.

Note to subscribers: the blog is moving to a bi-weekly format, so the next installment will be around 27 July. Here are two movies to tide you over. The first is Ivy reading a book and failing to identify the duck, and the second is her chasing her truck across our big wood floor.
